News Release
- The numbers released today show the largest increase of positive tests in a 24 hour period for Arkansas. There are 130 new cases reported.
- A majority of the new cases are from correctional facilities. Tests confirm the first outbreak in a state correctional facility. 43 out of 46 inmates in a maximum-security barrack at Cummins have tested positive. At the federal prison in Forrest City, there are 55 positive cases including 35 inmates.
- In addition, Dr. Nate Smith says 27 individuals have tested positive at a community corrections facility in Little Rock and there are 24 positive cases at a drug rehabilitation center in central Arkansas.
- The Governor says there is not any indication that Arkansas has reached its peak for new cases. He emphasized that now is not the time to change directions. Arkansans are encouraged to continue social distancing and wear masks in public settings where distancing cannot take place.
- To help develop criteria for Arkansans after the peak occurs, the Governor has created a Medical Advisory Board for COVID-19 Post Peak. Health Secretary Dr. Nate Smith will chair the board of epidemiologists who will give guidance on mitigation efforts to avoid peaks in the future.
- The Arkansas Health Department is expected to issue guidance regarding summer camps soon.
