With 57 votes, the 89th General Assembly elected Rep. Jeremy Gillam to serve as Speaker-designate.
Rep. Jeremy Gillam of Judsonia is serving his second term in the Arkansas House of Representatives. He represents District 49, which encompasses part of White County.
For the 89th General Assembly, Rep. Gillam serves on the House Judiciary Committee, the Agriculture, Forestry, and Economic Development Committee and the Arkansas Legislative Council. He is chair of the House Management Committee.
During the 88th General Assembly, Rep. Gillam served on the House Judiciary Committee, where he was on the Subcommittee for Corrections and Criminal Law. He also served on the House Committee for City, County and Local Affairs, where he chaired the Subcommittee on Local Government Personnel. In addition, Rep. Gillam served on the House and Joint Committees for Advanced Communications and Information Technology, and he was elected vice-chair of the House Freshman Caucus.
Rep. Gillam is a graduate of Beebe High School. He attended Arkansas State University in Beebe and received degrees in criminology and psychology from Arkansas State University. He has served on the White County Farm Bureau Board of Directors, the ASU Beebe Development Council, and the USDA Fruit and Vegetable Advisory Board. Mr. Gillam has been recognized with several awards from the Arkansas Farm Bureau, and in 2010, he was a runner-up for the American Farm Bureau's Young Farmers and Ranchers Achievement Award.
Rep. Gillam and his wife, Carissa, have two young sons.
The Speaker of the House assigns bills to the appropriate committees. He or she appoints representatives to select committees including House Rules and Joint Performance Review.
The Speaker also appoints the chair and vice chair to our ten standing committees such as Education and Public Health.
