Arkansas Girls State and Boys State

Last week, the members of the Arkansas House loaned their seats and desks in the House Chamber to 200 young men and women who have shown potential to be the next generation of leaders. Arkansas Girls State was established by the American Legion Auxiliary in the 1930's. Arkansas Boys State was established by the National American Legion. Every summer, hundreds of the state's brightest high school juniors come together at college campuses where an invented "state" is established. The students hold elections for every state office. At the end of the program, those who were elected as state representatives come the House chamber to debate the bills they drafted previously in the week.
